Star team world beaters
By STEVE SPINKS
YESTERDAY will go down as one of The Northern Star's greatest days in sport.
It was the day when The Northern Star took on the best lawn bowlers in Australia and won, with a little bit of help from some friends.
OK, OK, it wasn't really The Northern Star that won, but rather our plucky bowls columnist Jim Brigginshaw and his likely-looking triples team including John Lang from Evans Head and Brett Wilkie from Helensvale.
The 'fearless threesome' took on former Australian representative and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Cameron Curtis; Australian No2 and recent world championship fours silver medallist Kelvin Kerkow; and Kerkow's team-mate in the silver medal-winning team, Kevin Walsh.
The match was part of the Taylor Invitation Bowls Challenge at the Ballina Bowling Club.
As a sideline to the main competition, any bowler is welcome to try their luck against Australia's top talent for $10, which goes to the Ballina Hospital's Cancer Care Haemotology Unit.
With the match tied at one set all, it came down to final end shoot-out.
Lang held shot and Kerkow had two attempts to dislodge his bowl and claim victory.
There were cheers all round, as the trundlers chalked one up against the professionals.
Now for The Northern Star's next sporting conquest ...
