Star staff bring home gongs

By EMMA O'NEILL emma.oneill@northernstar.com.au TWO Northern Star journalists can now add another adjective to describe their work: Award winners.

Acting editor of The Northern Star, Samantha Turnbull, and sports journalist Adam Hicks both took home awards from the APN newspaper awards in Queensland.

They beat writers working for APN at 23 daily and more than 100 non-daily newspapers across Australia and New Zealand

Samantha was named Feature Writer of the Year and Adam Hicks was named Sports Writer of the Year at a ceremony at Yeppoon on Wednesday night.

Samantha's winning work included Weekender articles on nudists, 'EMO' children and a piece documenting the work of a doctor who saved a million brains.

"It was a privilege to win the award because feature writing is something most journalists love to do," she said.

Adam Hicks won his award for a series of articles about the racing industry.

Adam said it was a privilege to win his award for something 'that was fun to do'. He also said he enjoyed writing about racing on the North Coast because there were so many passionate people involved with the sport.

Much-loved Star photographer Doug Eaton was also named as one of three finalists for the Photographer of the Year Award (for a daily newspaper).

"Sam called me on Wednesday night to tell me I was a finalist and was just so excited," Doug said.

"I love working for the newspaper and hope my photos are eye-catching enough to make people read the articles."

"To think a photo I had taken was good enough to win an award is really exciting."

Doug's entry included photos from both the adopt-a-pet day and the cross and icon visit to Casino.

Ballina sales manager Kim Thomas was also named as a finalist in the Advertising Team of the Year category.

"Last year we won the Advertising Team of the Year Award, and so this year we didn't think we'd have a chance. So being named a finalist was a real buzz," she said.

Staff at The Northern Star couldn't be prouder of their colleagues and can't wait to see what these two talented wordsmiths, one passionate photographer and determined sales guru can achieve this year.
