Spears ? more woes for Poms
By STEVE SPINKS
AND the hits just keep on coming.
Following on from Australia's twin victories over England in rugby league and rugby union last weekend, word has filtered through that Marist Brothers league player Brett Spears has starred in Australian Universities' 18-12 victory over England Universities.
Spears, who is in the middle of a four-week tour, started at fullback for the Test.
He earned the man-of-thematch award for a brilliant defensive effort, which involved three try-saving tackles.
The selection of Spears at fullback was a surprise as he was originally picked as a winger.
It only highlights the Southern Cross University student's versatility, as he played in the back-row for Marist Brothers all season.
He turned out on the flank for Australia in their earlier match against France Universities.
The French adapted to the appalling conditions, which included snow and mud, a lot better, and pulled off an upset victory.
However, the victory over the English has turned around the tour.
There are matches against Scotland, Ireland and Wales and another match against England to go.
This is the second season Spears has been selected in the Australian Universities team.
Last year he played on the wing in Australia's twoTest victory over England Universities in Australia.
