Soccer FNC boss heads for Sydney
By STEVE SPINKS
THE president of Soccer Far North Coast Michael Gaertner has confidently predicted Australia will win tonight's World Cup Qualifying match against Uruguay in Sydney 2-0.
Or maybe that should read ? hopefully predicted.
"That score is based on what we need," Gaertner admitted.
"I know it can go to penalties, but I would prefer not to have to rely on that."
Gaertner and his wife Jane, from Wollongbar, are flying to Sydney this afternoon to be part of the sell-out 80,000 crowd.
"This is a first for myself and my wife so we're really looking forward to it," he said.
"Hopefully it won't be the last time."
The Northern Star believes the Gaertners' hit-and-run mission could have been better timed.
They should have gone down a day early so they could have kept the Uruguayan team up all night by making a heap of noise outside the South Americans' motel as Montevideo residents infamously did to the Socceroos four years ago.
"Maybe some other fans will do that," chuckled Gaertner.
Instead, the SFNC supremo will support Australia by donning his yellow and green shirt.
