Simone: Long list of suspects
By ALEX EASTON
TOBIAS SUCKFULL is only one of a long list of suspects in the killing of German tourist Simone Strobel, Lismore police said yesterday.
Mr Suckfull, Simone's boyfriend, was last week dramatically outed as a suspect in the case when German prosecutor Bardo Backert accused him of lying to police and said he was suspected of having killed the tourist while they were in Lismore.
Simone's body was found in February across the road from the Lismore Tourist and Caravan Park, where she had been staying with Mr Suckfull, his sister Katrin, and Katrin's boyfriend Jens Martin.
Mr Suckfull is the first person to have been named by authorities as a suspect, but Richmond Local Area Command crime manager, Detective Inspector Anne Langford, yesterday said he was one of many suspects.
She declined to comment on Mr Backert's reasons for naming Mr Suckfull, but said the NSW Police list of suspects included him and everyone else who had been in contact with Simone around the time she was killed.
Det Insp Langford said German and NSW police were working closely on the case, but added their investigations were separate.
A friend of the couple said yesterday Mr Suckfull and his brother-in-law, Uwe Klein, had told him they were employing a lawyer to deal with Mr Suckfull being named as a suspect.
Manfred Schweidler, a reporter covering the case in the couple's home region of Wurzburg, said Mr Suckfull appeared to have gone to ground in his home village of Reiden, with residents saying he had not been seen for several days.
