Simon earns State call-up

BANGALOW'S Simon Milenko has joined an elite group of local cricketers after earning selection in the Queensland Under-19s side.

Milenko, who played in the LJ Hooker League with Eastern Districts last season, is playing mainly second grade for the Gold Coast in the Brisbane competition.

But it was his performances for the Gold Coast Under-19s that impressed selectors.

In five matches for the junior Dolphins, Milenko scored two centuries 135 and 105 and went close to a third with 95.

In grade cricket, the young all-rounder has also snared one five wicket haul with his fast-medium bowling.

Milenko made his first grade debut bowling for the Gold Coast last Saturday after regular fast bowler Chris Swann was called up to the Queensland Pura Cup team to play Western Australia.

The 19-year-old's life pretty much revolves around cricket at the moment.

After finishing last season with Easts, he travelled overseas and played in England.

On his return he started work at the Byron Bay Newsagents and commutes three times a week to the Gold Coast to train and play.

Following this season, Milenko intends to head back to England for a second time before returning to the Gold Coast to pursue his cricket career and start a degree at Bond University.

The former Trinity Catholic College student is the second player from the Northern Rivers to win selection in a State Under-19s team in the past few years.

NSW rookie contract holder Tom Cooper represented NSW in the Australian Under-19s Championships two seasons ago.

He went on to earn selection in the Australian team that played in the Under-19 World Cup.

Milenko and his Queensland team-mates will contest the Australian Championships in Hobart from December 10 to 21.
