Safety drive on highway

By SAMANTHA TURNBULL sam.turnbull@northernstar.com.au HEAD-ON crashes will be more avoidable in the New%Italy area with the installation of a wire rope barrier down%the centre of the Pacific Highway. The highway near Nortons Road has also been widened, resurfaced and had a longer overtaking lane constructed. The work was an extension of that recently completed to the south at Turners Road. New Federal Member for Page, Janelle Saffin, inspected the upgraded stretch of road with NSW Roads Minister%Eric Roozendaal last week. Mr Roozendaal said with the work now complete the Pacific Highway had been%widened and resurfaced for approximately 2.5km to the north of Nortons Road. "The widening has allowed for installation of a wire rope barrier, providing separation between opposing traffic and improving road safety," Mr Roozendaal said. "Clearly, the new wire rope will vastly improve safety by preventing head-on crashes." Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese said the $6.1 million project was part of the $20 million package of%safety works on the Pacific Highway jointly funded by the Australian and NSW Governments and announced in June 2006.
