Rivals set for grand finale in netball

RIVALS Daleys and Breakaways will meet today in what promises to be a hard-fought Lismore Netball Association premier division grand final.

The game shapes as a battle of youth versus experience, with defending premiers Daleys boasting some quality veterans of the game, while Breakaways have many young representative players.

Daleys are considered favourites after downing Breakaways in the major semi-final two weeks ago and beating them in their previous competition encounter.

But the young Breakaways this year's minor premiers beat Daleys earlier in the season and, given today's forecast for warm weather, may have an edge over their older rivals.

Certainly, Breakaways captain and acting coach Rachelle Watson believes her young charges will lift for the decider, especially with Breakaways mentor Tracey Robinson on hand.

Robinson has been a major force in Lismore netball for many years but she took up a senior State coaching role in Tasmania at the start of this year.

She will be in Lismore for the grand final and Watson says her presence is bound to lift Breakaways.

"Many of our girls have been mentored by Tracey from their earliest days in netball," Watson said.

"They will be out to take the title as much for her as for themselves."

Daleys' Lauren Woods, while confident, is taking nothing for granted.

"It is fair to say Daleys will go in as favourites, but it's a grand final and anything can happen," she said.

"We look like we could be missing some of our key players today, but we still have a good squad.

"Our defence, led by Lisa Brown, is very strong and will be a handful for the Breakaways attack.

"There is a good rivalry between our clubs and this should make for an entertaining grand final."

The premier division grand final will start at 2.15pm at the Lismore courts.
