Rising star to feature in big night of boxing



BALLINA'S rising senior welterweight John Boyde will take on experienced Sydney boxer Cain Buckley in a Ballina Island Amateur Boxing League promotion at Paddy McGinty's Pub on Saturday night.

Boyde is a relentless fighter and has proved to have a good chin.

Buckley is an aggressive boxer with a knockout punch in both hands.

Wayne Reid of Yamba will meet Eddy Debono of Grafton in a super heavyweight bout. Reid hits the scales at 135kg and Debono comes in at 110kg.

The rest of the card includes:

n Yamba's Troy Harding against John Murphy of Valentine on the Central Coast in a senior light heavyweight (81kg) bout.

n Ballina's Robert Coorey meeting Daniel Austin of Yamba in senior welterweight (67kg).

n Josh Bolt of Ballina taking on Adam Jones of Yamba in senior cruiserweight (86kg).

n Toby McGrath of the new Chatsworth club meeting Denis Ritchy of Kempsey in light middleweight (71kg).

n Shane McLennan of Ballina facing Luke Bunda of Valentine in senior light welterweight (63.5kg).

n Luke Fysh of Byron Bay stepping in against William Ven of Chatsworth in junior welterweight (67kg).

n Rod Cameron of Ballina meeting Blake Cox of Valentine in junior bantamweight (54kg).

n Wylie Spencer of Ballina squaring off against Andrew Jones of Chatsworth in junior middleweight (75kg).

Other Ballina boxers to be matched include super heavyweight Ryan 'Dibs' Corbett, light welterweight Bill Magnay and featherweight Luke Kapeen.

Other competing clubs are Toowoomba, Coffs Harbour and Hornsby.

A number of the boxers are using the event as a final hit-out before competing in the league's national titles at Bendigo in Victoria next month.

Doors will open at 6pm and the action starts at 7pm.

Admission is $20.
