NORTHERN STAR reporter Renee Redmond was named North Coast National Showgirl for 2005 last night.

Claiming the first runner-up prize was Lismore nursing student Lara Mitchell with another reporter from the Star, Jane Gardner, claiming third.

Renee, normally cool and confident in her professional life, said she was trembling after her name was announced.

"I was just concentrating on not dropping the mic," she said.

"Now I'm really looking forward to the rest of the show and sashing some cows."

Miranda Saunders, NBN newsreader and last year's showgirl, said she was a little sad to be handing the mantle over.

"I've just been so proud to represent the spirit of the Northern Rivers region," she said.

All three judges ? Northern Star editor Russell Eldridge, Summerland Travel manager Kaylene Hopf and showgirl committee member Wendy Painter ? said it was tough to choose a winner from the six contestants.

Professor Zbys Klich, the acting Southern Cross University vice-chancellor, officially opened the show in the big top after rain struck for the fourth year in a row.
