Region is burning up
FIREFIGHTERS narrowly won a pitched battle to save homes at Cabarita yesterday as the region baked under an early summer.
The Northern Rivers had a preview of some of the worst summer had to offer, with unofficial temperatures soaring up to the 40-degree mark, and warnings of impending water restrictions.
Rous Water warned the entire region could be under restrictions within six weeks without good rain, and Lismore City Council warned Nimbin faced severe restrictions within a week.
However, at the same time, the SES warned people to brace for storms, predicted to sweep across the Far North Coast today.
Official observations from the Bureau of Meteorology noted temperatures of 28 degrees Celsius at Ballina, 34 degrees at Lismore and 36 degrees at Casino, but people across the region reported temperatures closer to 40 degrees.
