Redmen to stay in top division after 2-0 win

By MARK ROBINSON LISMORE Workers have retained their place in Football FNC Premier League soccer after a 2-0 win over first division club Alstonville at Oakes Oval, Lismore, on Tuesday night.

The two sides were playing off for the vacant position left by the departure of Maclean, with the Redmen overcoming heavy conditions and a spirited performance from Villa to preserve their record of never being relegated from the top ranks.

Workers' opening goal was set up by a quick interchange of passes between Anthony Alvos, Josh Law and Mark Riley, with Riley beating a defender before striking an angled shot into the net.

The Redmen wasted several opportunities to extend the lead, but eventually a second-half penalty from Anthony Alvos wrapped up one of the most important wins in the club's history.

Alvos and Riley were the pick of the Redmen.

Relieved coach Pedro Bezzera said: "It's been a tough season, but this is a good finish and we can start preparing for next season now.
