Races attract record 197 nominations

By Grahame Timbrell BALLINA'S race meeting on Tuesday has set a record with an unprecedented 197 horses nominated.

"We have never had that many nominations, not even for our cup meeting," club president Gary Kliese said.

"Last year's cup day was the previous best with 174 nominations.

"This is a great reflection on the strength of racing on the Northern Rivers, the quality of our racing surface and the way we are programming our races.

"It is even more amazing when you consider that Grafton raced today (Friday) and they had big fields in every race."

Ballina is proving particularly popular among Queensland trainers, with 37 stables from across the border nominating 62 horses.

They include such high-profile trainers as Gerald Ryan, Dale Sutton, Noel Doyle, Maryann Brosnan, Ricky Ludwig, Barry Bowditch and Alicia Willick.
