Prison Farm Plan

By SAMANTHA TURNBULL

A BLOCK of land between Tabulam and Ewingar has been tipped as the site for a $9-million prison farm. Welshs Road residents, 25km south of Tabulam, yesterday said a property in their road had been sold, and State Government officials had visited them with promotional material about correctional facilities. George and Fuhrmann Real Estate in Casino was rumoured to have secured the deal but, when contacted by The Northern Star, said they had 'no information' about the site. A spokesman for State Justice Minister John Hatzistergos said a correctional centre would be built somewhere on the North Coast, but that the location would be revealed in a few months. Clarence Valley Council senior planner Clem Rhoden said the Government had not lodged a development application for the site, but he had spoken to the NSW Department of Commerce about the possibility of a prison at Tabulam. Ken Campbell, who lives next door to the land, vowed to fight the plans once they were made public. "We live in a rural setting. This would be like setting up another town...it would have the same amount of people as Tabulam," he said.
