Police probe alleged Lennox rape
By ADAM HICKS
TWO 17-year-old boys have been charged with raping a 15-year-old girl at Lennox Head during the New Year's Eve celebrations.
Police yesterday cordoned off and searched the scene of the alleged rape, south of Lennox Head Surf Club.
Following the arrests, police announced they would continue inquiries and set up a special operation, Strike Force Tabali, to further investigate the alleged multiple rape.
Officers from the State Crime Command's Sex Crimes Squad were flown from Sydney to join the investigation.
The alleged sexual assault occurred about 12.30am on January 1 as an estimated crowd of 16,000 people celebrated in the town.
Two boys were arrested and charged later the same day.
Both boys were granted conditional bail to face charges of aggravated sexual assault before Lismore Children's Court on January 10 and Ballina children's Court on January 21.
Richmond police superintendent Bruce Lyons said the arrests were not made public until yesterday to avoid compromising the investigation.
He also said the addresses and locality of the boys would not be revealed for the same reason, but said neither boy posed a threat to the community.
Anyone with information on the incident should contact Ballina police on 6681 8699 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
