Pilot survives copter crash

By SAMANTHA TURNBULL sam.turnbull@northernstar.com.au A PILOT has miraculously survived a crash that left his helicopter in a mangled wreck.

The aircraft crashed into powerlines at Lower Peacock Creek, between Bonalbo and Tabulam, at 2.15pm yesterday.

State Emergency Service workers and ambulance paramedics were called to the scene, along with the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter, which had to leave a search for missing fishermen off the coast of Ballina.

The injured pilot managed to escape from the twisted wreckage of the ag-spraying helicopter before paramedics arrived. He was found surrounded by broken pieces of the helicopter spread around a paddock up to 100 metres from the main wreckage.

The man suffered chest injuries in the crash and was airlifted by the rescue helicopter to Lismore Base Hospital.

His condition was reported as stable last night. The cause of the crash is%being investigated.
