DRINKING?S FOR THE BIRDS: Athol Lewis of Ballina Heights and his fifteen-year-old budgie Peter, who loves a beer.

Pete, the beer swilling budgie

By ADAM HICKS

LIKE his green and gold feathers, Peter the beer drinking budgie, is as ridgy didge as the home brew he knocks back on Sunday afternoons.

For starters he likes vegemite, according to Ballina owners Athol and Margaret Lewis.

"He has vegemite smeared on a piece of toast for breakfast every morning," Mrs Lewis said.

He is always up for a shout.

"He says 'It's five o'clock Athol, time for a scotch and soda'," Mr Lewis said.

"But he slurs on the 'soda' so you'd swear he'd had a few," Mrs Lewis said.

He is not afraid to give a bit of lip to Socks the cat.

"He'd say 'come on Socksy, give us a kissy, kissy, kissy'," Mrs Lewis said.

And come the weekend, Peter loves a beer while watching the cricket.

"You pour beer over his seed bell and he sits there loving his seed. If beer drips off the bell, he licks it off the floor."
