Pat chosen in league tour side

BYRON Bay rugby league player and champion beach sprinter Pat Norton has been selected in the Australian Institute of Sport Under-18 side to tour France and England next month.

The 18-year-old, who is currently sitting for his Higher School Certificate, has been awarded a two-year scholarship with the institute.

The 20-man squad will be overseas for three weeks and will play five matches including an exhibition game before Australia takes on England in the Tri-Nations Rugby League.

For Pat, who has been playing rugby league since he was eight, it will be his first overseas trip.

He has played for the Byron Bay Rugby League Club for nine years, but has spent much of this season on the sidelines due to a knee injury.

"My knee has healed now and I am looking forward to this fantastic opportunity," Pat said.

"I would like to be a professional football player and this trip will provide me with some great experience.

"Six players in the team made the Australian Schoolboys squad this year so it is real privilege for me to be playing with them."

Pat said he would like to thank Gala Direct in Byron Bay for helping him with his expenses.

In return, Pat will be doing some modelling for the clothing company.
