THE Federal Government has provided more details on how its multi-?sbillion-dollar Budget allocation for roads will be spent on the North Coast.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Regional Services, Mark Vaile, said there were now construction contracts in place to upgrade 74km of the Pacific Highway.

??There has never been so much construction work on the Pacific Highway at the same time," Mr Vaile said.

The Federal Government has committed half of the cost of the $256 million Brunswick-to-Yelgun upgrade.

The Government will also provide $10 million ($5 million in 2007/8) for planning and pre-construction work on the proposed Tintenbar-to-Ewingsdale bypass. . It will include a short tunnel to bypass the St Helena section of the highway. The new road will connect to the Ballina bypass, which is to receive $29 million in Federal funding for pre-construction work by June this year.
