Australia to help Tonga with cash after Cyclone Ian
TONGA will get $50,000 to help it recover from the devastation caused by Cyclone Ian last weekend, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop announced on Tuesday.
The initial grant will help those affected by the Category Five cyclone by supplying blankets, water containers, tarpaulins, kitchen sets and hygiene kits.
Ms Bishop said in a statement the cyclone had caused one confirmed death and extensive damage to homes, crops and buildings across the Pacific nation.
Australia was also working with Tonga through the defence cooperation program and the High Commission in Tonga.
The Australian Tongan community worried about family and friends should try to contact them directly.
If this fails, and people are worried, Australian residents should call the Department of Foreign Affair's consular emergency centre on 1300 555 135.
