Nathan carries the flag

BYRON BAY kayaker Nathan Baggaley was honoured with carrying the Australian flag in the opening ceremony for the 34th International Canoe Federation World Championships in Croatia.

He backed it up by moving into the semi-finals in three events.

Baggaley cruised through the heats of the K1 500m, K1 1000m and K4 1000m with ease on Thursday.

He also posted the fastest qualifying times in the K1 1000m and the K1 500m.

In the K4 1000m, the crew suffered from inexperience at the starting line because of a lack of racing together, but once under way the boat made its way through the field to finish fourth.

Baggaley said the team was happy with its first-up performance but they know there is plenty of room for improvement.

Byron Bay's Craig Rodgers is also a member of the K4 1000m boat.

Semi-finals were set for last night.
