Mystery illness strikes pelicans

By JOSIE SARGENT

FIVE pelicans were found almost comatose and suffering a mystery illness at the Burns Point Ferry in the Richmond River.

Australian Seabird Rescue president, Lance Ferris, said that although no evidence has been uncovered, poison or pollution is suspected.

"Birds have died in numbers before, but spread over an area," he said .

"But all these birds were within a stone's throw of each other, which made us suspicious."

Two birds have died with a third having to be euthanised due to blindness.

Lennox Head veterinarian Evan Kosach said they were trying to find a laboratory in Sydney to do tests for free, otherwise it would cost ASR several thousand dollars.
