Murder accused extradited
A 28-YEAR-OLD man extradited from South Australia will appear in Wentworth Local Court today charged with murder.
On Monday, July 25, the accused seriously assaulted a 36year-old man in Nimbin.
The victim was taken to Lismore Base Hospital and placed on life support after suffering injuries to his chest, rib area and head.
However he died two days later on Wednesday, August 3.
No names have been released but both men were reported to be temporary residents of Nimbin.
South Australian police arrested a 28-year-old man near Renmark on Friday, August 5, after a warrant of apprehension was issued by New South Wales Police.
Lismore police detectives, including Detective Shane Diehm and Detective Dave Mackie, flew to Berri in South Australia and applied for the man's extradition.
Detective Diehm said the accused was charged with murder yesterday at Dareton Police Station.
The man was also charged with maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm.
President of Nimbin Chamber of Commerce Andrew Kavasilas said he felt sorry for the victim and his family, but he said he was not 'overly surprised' by the incident.
"It's shocking news that what is happening around the country is happening here," he said.
"The escalation of violence has been coming into Nimbin more and more over the past few years.
"Quite frankly everyone thought it would end in murder or that someone would be killed."
Mr Kavasilas said Nimbin had been isolated from similar events happening elsewhere.
"But it's a sign of the times," he said.
"In reality, we're quite a law-abiding town."
Detectives are still urging anyone who might have any information about the assault to contact Lismore detectives on 66231529 or Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.
