Messy waves for Mals

THE surf God Huey did Byron Bay no favours yesterday as the Byron Bay Malibu Classic got under way.

Competition was delayed by an hour as organisers looked for a suitable break, finally deciding on Broken Head. However, with an on-shore wind and messy, one-metre conditions, the surf was anything but ideal.

The brothers Wilson, Julian, Bart and Seb, from Coolum, coped best and will line up in the final of the 9-foot division tomorrow against locals Josh Munro and Michael Black.

The semi-finals of the Over-55s and Over-50s are today, along with juniors and Old Mal competition.

The final of the Over-45s division is tomorrow.
