Madigan clan scores a Lismore double

By JOHN SCHOLTEN

SHALANA Girl scored an impressive win in the Northern Rivers Hotel Triple Win Final (520m) at the Lismore greyhounds on Tuesday night.

When the lids opened Nuranaki, the even-money favourite, dwelt at the start and found herself squeezed out and dropped back to last as Bubba's Lady went to the lead around the first turn with Chew Dear in hot pursuit.

Shalana Girl, at this stage, had worked her way to third place, about six lengths from the leaders.

The Jim Madigan-trained youngster then unleashed a powerful burst.

She gathered in her opponents as they turned for home and she had a comfortable three-and-a-quarter lengths to spare at the finish over Chew Dear and Bubba's Lady, clcoking 30.32s.

Shalana Girl, which is owned by Brooke Madigan and trained by her father Jim, is a top-class stayer in the making and it appears only a matter of time before she makes her mark in races longer than 520 metres.

Villarchi, a kennel-mate to Shalana Girl, set the time standard for the night when he took out the Coraki Bakery Stake (520m) in a smart 29.77s.

The favourite, Siam Smile, jumped well and set up a handy lead down the back straight.

But she had no answer to Villarchi's winning burst, which gave him six lengths to spare at the finish, capping a successful evening for the Madigan clan.
