Long weekend rest for Bryon builders

WEEKENDS at Wardell are some- thing the Waddells don't know well. Steve Waddell works six days a week as a building site supervisor in Byron Bay, leaving only Sun- day to relax with his partner Vicki and their three-year-old daughter Georgia at their Wardell home. However, a move by the Byron Shire Council to halt construction work in the shire on six long weekends of the year has thrilled the family. "Long weekends should be sa- cred and the council has recog- nised that," Steve said. "A lot of smaller building com- panies and individual contractors in the area work both days of the weekend. "I know a lot of them who have a very poor quality of life which will only get worse under the Federal Government's indus- trial relations reforms." The council voted in favour of a motion put forward by mayor Jan Barham at a meeting on Tuesday to prohibit construction works on public holidays, Satur- days and Sundays adjacent to public holidays and construction industry awarded rostered days off adjacent to public holidays. Cr Barham said the motion was inspired by a NSW Unions campaign to give workers reason- able rest and recreation time. She said it would also address community concerns regarding noise pollution, dust, vibrations from power tools, fumes and movement of construction vehicles through local streets. Steve said he was impressed a local council had taken its own steps to protect workers and give them more time with their fami- lies. "It's magnificent that the coun- cil is understanding the workers' cause because the Federal Govern-

ment isn't supporting us at all," he said. "Jan Barham has leapt up in my opinion. "I have a lot of respect for her now. "This is a huge step in the right direction." Cr Barham's motion did not in- clude minor renovations or refur- bishments to single dwellings, owner/builder construction of sin- gle dwelling or housing estates consisting of predominantly unoc- cupied single dwellings. Before Cr Barham's motion, construction works which inter- fered with the amenity of neigh- bourhoods in the Byron Shire were limited to: Monday to Friday from 7am to 6pm, Saturdays 7am to 1pm (if inaudible on residential premises otherwise 8am to 1pm) and no construction works on Sundays or public holidays. n What do you think?
