THE Lismore Little Athletics Centre is hosting the 2005 Northern Rivers LAANSW Zone Championships next weekend.

The championships, to be held at Riverview Park, South Lismore, have attracted nominations from 12 of the 13 centres operating in the area from Nambucca to Lismore and Ballina.

About 300 athletes, aged between seven and 15 years, are expected to converge on Lismore for the track and field championships.

Lismore, Ballina and Casino centres have 130 athletes nominated, with 70 alone coming from Lismore, the largest centre in the zone.

The championships will be officially opened on Saturday at 10.30am.

Little Athletics involves the full range of track events ? from 50 to 3000 metres ? and field events such as long, high and triple jump as well as shot put, discus and javelin.

Local Centres are fielding very strong fields with winning performances expected from Leisha Preisser (Ballina), Amanda Jennings, Will Gardner, Zoe Dundas, Mathew Payne, Lisa King and Madison Riley, from Lismore. Events start at 8.30am on both days and entry is free for spectators.

Canteen facilities will be operating for the two days.
