Lismore showgirl off to Royal Easter Show

WINNING the weekend Zone One Showgirl finals came with an added bonus for Lismore’s Rebecca Chappell.

The North Coast National 2007 showgirl will not only represent the district at Sydney’s Royal Easter Show, but will also get an all expenses paid engagement party.

“My mum said she’d pay for my engagement party because I’ll have to buy so many new clothes for Sydney,” the 23-year-old said.

Rebecca, a district banking officer with Elders Rural Bank, is engaged to Jeroen Leenders, who travelled to Wauchope on Saturday to support his fiancée in the finals.

She was competing against 11 other contestants who had won the showgirl competition at their local shows between Taree and Tweed Heads.

When Rebecca was announced as the winner to go on to Sydney, Jeroen was as excited as she was.

“He said he was very proud of me,” Rebecca said.

To take out the district title, Rebecca was judged on her general knowledge in two interviews, her personality and deportment.

At the Royal Easter Show, she also will be under the constant watch of judges, but it will be over a five-day period.

If she wins the State title, she may also get out of paying for her wedding.

First prize for the Sydney winner is $11,200, runner-up gets $4000 and third place $2500.

But for Rebecca, the experience of competing in Sydney will be priceless.

“The people I meet and the contacts I make will help me in my career and in my involvement with the Rural Youth Organisation,” she said.

“Showgirl is something I’ve always wanted to do because my aunties went it in, I’m from a rural background and did a Bachelor of Agribusiness.”
