Lismore first cab off rank with hybrid taxi

LISMORE taxi driver Ray Hughes hadn't heard of hybrid cars before he took a recent holiday to Cairns, Queensland.
"I was picked up at the airport by someone in a hybrid taxi and I thought it was a great idea," he said.
When Ray returned to Lismore he turned inspiration into a historic moment.
He purchased the first hybrid taxi to be used in NSW country.
Ray's Toyota Prius taxi has only been on the road for a week and has already reduced his petrol bill.
"The car is very quiet, handles really well and has a bit of grunt when you need it," he said.
Ray said knowing he was emitting less carbon dioxide into the environment was also a good feeling.
According to Toyota, if you drive a Prius for 100,000km you'll save 7.5 tonnes of Co2. City Toyota Lismore sales manager Mike Koryzma said he had been selling around three Toyota Prius hybrid cars a month.
"With fuel prices going through the roof, customers are starting to think this is a way they can reduce their costs," he said.
Mr Koryzma said one customer who bought a Prius recently contacted the dealership. "He called to tell us he had driven to the Victorian border from Lismore on one tank of fuel," he said.
Mr Koryzma said the cars were becoming increasingly popular due to their fuel efficiency, reduced Co2 emissions and ease of use.
"George Clooney even drives a hybrid car," he said.
