Lennox Head's Melling surfs well in France



LENNOX Head's Adam Melling carved it up in tough conditions in France yesterday to be the highest scoring heat winner on day one at the Rip Curl Pro Super Series.

Melling posted a two-wave combined total of 15.33 points on the way to victory over fellow Aussies Rhys Bombaci and Jarrad Sullivan and American Austin Ware.

Competitors at the Rip Curl Pro Super Series, the years most important World Qualifying Series event, were met with stormy conditions and wild two-metre (5-6ft) surf at surf's world-famous Seignosse on the French south-west coast.

With only 144 surfers entering the event due to the unique format of the Super Series, some of surfings big names have already hit the water for this first taste of competition action, including former ASP World Tour surfer Eric Rebihre and Jonathan Gonzalez.

Melling's first-up win came over Hawaiin Nathan Carroll and former three-time ASP World Champion, Tom Curren, from the US.

Yesterday's best wave score went to German surfer Marlon Lipke, who posted a near-perfect 9.33-point ride in the fourth heat.

Melling will be tested again today with the forecast suggesting strong onshore winds increasing with the swell expected to rise slightly overnight.
