Kids dice with death

By RENEE REDMOND

KIDS as young as eight years old are dicing with death by lying on Ballina town roads, playing chicken with cars and trucks.

The group of five children, aged between eight and 15 years old, were seen lying on the busy roads, pretending to throw things at cars and intimidating drivers on Fox and Cherry streets.

A Ballina resident said he was concerned about an eight-year-old girl, who was part of the group, playing chicken last Wednesday at 11pm.

"We contacted the police and they drove through the street. The kids must have run off," he said.

The concerned resident said the group of children often gathered around this area yelling obscenities and throwing things at his windows.

"They're local kids that live around this area," he said.

A truck driver, driving through at 11.20pm on Wednesday, said he saw the group of five children playing chicken on the road, at the corner of Fox and Cherry streets.

Police Inspector Bill McKenna said police attended the scene but found no children in the area.

"We would appreciate parents being vigilant in relation to the whereabouts of their children at all times."
