Kadina soccer into last sixteen

By STEVE SPINKS

KADINA High School has moved into the last 16 of the Combined High School State-wide soccer knock-out after defeating Orara High School from Coffs Harbour 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out last Thursday at Weston Park, Goonellabah.

Goalkeeper Christian Howard was the star for the Lismore school after he saved two penalty kicks in the deciding shoot-out.

Kadina held a slender 1-0 lead at half-time before Orara came back to level in the second-half.

The visitors dominated for most of the second stanza but desperate defence and Howard's safe hands kept Kadina in the match.

Making the victory all the more outstanding was the fact that Kadina were without their best player, Joel Gosper.

Gosper, who will play in this Sunday's Far North Coast All Stars team when they play the new A-League side the Queensland Roar at Oakes Oval, was unavailable due to representative duty with the NSW CHS side.

Kadina are yet to find out who they will play in their next match, but it could be Sydney powerhouse Westfield Sports High. Westfield is a selective sports high school which has a scholarship program plus the luxury of having chosen sports as part of their curriculum.

It could be a difficult assignment for Kadina.
