Jetstar to take over flightsbetween Ballina and Sydney

By ALEX EASTON

QANTAS will introduce its budget carrier, Jetstar, to Ballina-Byron airport from July 12, promising $28 introductory fares but fewer flights.

Jetstar will replace the QantasLink Dash 8s ? which fly three times a day between Ballina and Sydney ? with a single jet so large the company says it will offer more seats than the three QantasLink flights combined.

Jetstar started taking bookings yesterday with an introductory fare of $28 between Sydney and Ballina.

However, Qantas was yesterday afternoon also still taking bookings for Dash 8s on its existing timetable.

Rival carrier Virgin Blue, which also offers only one flight a day at Ballina, responded with a notice on its website that it would honour the QantasLink tickets.

Lennox Head-based Liberal MLC Catherine Cusack lashed the decision, which will switch Qantas' attentions from the region's business market to the tourist market.

Ms Cusack said QantasLink offered the only early evening service between Sydney and Ballina, and people living on the Northern Rivers, but working in Sydney, relied heavily on that service.
