Hunt for gas to get $1m boost

DEPUTY Prime Minister Mark Vaile will announce a funding windfall for methane gas company Metgasco during his visit to Casino today.

The company will receive $1.06 million from the Government to continue the search for methane gas north and west of Casino.

Mr Vaile's press secretary said the Minister was impressed with the scale of Metgasco's proposed multi-million dollar gas pipeline.

"Mr Vaile believes an enterprise of this size would have really good economic benefits for the Northern Rivers and help sustain other industries in the region," he said. The end user would be a 250 megawatt gas-fed power station near Ipswich, feeding 200,000 homes ? provided they find a commercial quantity of gas.

The Metgasco drilling project was one of 10 in Australia to receive money under the Sustainable Regions program. The Northern Rivers has been allocated $12 million in total.
