Heywood stars in Far North Coast win

By Adam Hicks

ALL-ROUNDER Ritchie Heywood snared three wickets and scored a handy 34 runs to help Far North Coast topple Lower North Coast in the Aboriginal selection trial match at Toormina Oval, Sawtell, yesterday.

LNC won the toss and got off to a quick start, scoring 30 runs without loss before Heywood and Tane Morgan came on first change.

The medium pace duo delivered a sharp eight-over spell which bogged down the opposition and gave Heywood 3-23 while Morgan picked up 2-15. FNC captain Andrew Gordon said the team's fielding in the first 20 overs was a highlight of the match.

"They started off well with a cruisy 30-run partnership, then we got stuck into it," Gordon said.

"We took some sharp catches and really put the pressure on."

LNC set FNC a 151-run target and opener Rob Roberts didn't waste any time going after it.

Roberts' first scoring shot was six the third ball of the innings.

"It was a solid hit over mid-on for six off a new pill which was pretty surprising," Gordon said.

"He's a good hard hitter and will have a go at anything pitched up. He loves going at it."

Roberts batted through the innings for an undefeated 52. Heywood notched up 34 before retiring as FNC cruised to 8-170.

The dominant performance was rewarded with eight members of the FNC team winning spots in the North Coast Aboriginal team to play Moree on December 7, 8 and 9.
