Head-on fatal

A MAN is dead and a woman has been critically injured following an accident on the Bruxner Highway at Alphadale, near Wollongbar, on Saturday.

Police said high speed and reckless driving were factors.

The 30-year-old Goonellabah man, driving a black Holden ute, was observed to be driving in a dangerous manner seconds before the accident happened at 3.20pm, police said.

He was travelling east towards Ballina and had overtaken a car at high speed, clipping its rear as he pulled out across double unbroken lines, they said.

Duty officer Insp Glen Gilbert said the man overtook another car in a 100km zone near the Marom Creek fixed speed camera. He lost control and hit a west-bound car being driven by a 48-year-old Goonellabah woman. The man had to be cut from the wreckage.

The woman sustained severe head injuries and was last night in intensive care in Lismore Base Hospital in a stable but critical condition. The Bruxner Highway was closed for two hours.

Police do not yet know if the man was affected by alcohol or drugs.
