Hayfever relief in sight thanks to research

By NERIDA BLOK

HAYFEVER sufferer Lyn Crossingham will celebrate the day she can throw away the tissues.

And that day may soon come following results released from a research study she participated in three-years ago.

The study, undertaken by the Woolcock Institute of Medical Re- search, in conjunction with the Northern Rivers University Department of Rural Health based in Lismore, aimed to test the effectiveness of a new nasal filter not yet commercially available.

Ms Crossingham, 36, of Casino, was one of 50 Casino residents to participate in the trials, which she said involved spending a couple of hours over two weekends in Queen Elizabeth Park, near the river bank laced with ragweed.

She said she was a willing participant, keen to overcome her allergic reaction to the grass.

"I get itchy eyes, a runny nose and a stuffed up head, and if I don't keep it under control, asthma," she said.

"It's just like having a head cold with the tap running."

Dr Geoff Morgan, from the Department of Rural Health, said results from the research showed significant improvements in a range of hay fever related symptoms.

He said the research showed that on average, people using the soft plastic nasal filter tubes, recorded a 68 per cent reduction in the severity of symptoms.
