Grey Nomads find nirvana in Lismore
By Luke Prendergast
CARAVANS, campers, motor homes, boats, tents, kayaks, portable fridges, ovens, shower systems and other accessories for the intrepid road traveller were on display at the 4WD, Caravan, Camping and Marine Show at the Lismore Showground on the weekend.
Gone are the days when a caravan was little more than a box on wheels with a mattress inside. Nowadays they feature flatscreen TVs, fridges large enough to store a week's worth of food, fair dinkum ovens and grills, microwaves, showers, and double beds complete with reading lamps and mini-wardrobes with mirrored doors. Heck, they've even got the kitchen sink!
Richard Spencer, from Empire Vale, usually takes a caravan holiday once a year.
The cane farmer has a two-year-old Coromal 16-footer and is not yet looking to upgrade, but nonetheless took the chance to see what was new in all things caravan.
"It's good to come and see what they're doing," he said, checking out the latest in portable hot water heaters.
This one hooks up to your car's heater to ensure you have a nice hot shower at the end of a dusty day's driving," he said.
"It's a good set-up; simple. I like this idea because it's simple and easy."
