Girls prepare for their biggest event of year
LEADING women surfers, including Pauline Menczer, Nicola Atherton, Kathy Newman, Jenny Boggis and Laurina McGrath, will headline the 15th ICON All Girls Surf Showdown over the long weekend next month (June 9-11).
Many other up-and-coming surfers will use the event to see what their future may hold against girls already on the international circuit.
There will be $2500 up for grabs from Southern Cross Credit Union for the finalists in the Open Pro.
The winner will collect $1000, a luxury holiday from Headlands Beach Resort and $2500 of electrical goods from Gary Fox The Good Guys Ballina.
Narrabeen's Laura Enever has had excellent training at the world junior titles in Portugal and will compete in the 21 years and under division, which carries a cash prize of $500 plus an accommodation package sponsored by Lake Ainsworth Department of Sport and Recreation.
Finalists in all divisions will receive merchandise from ICON, GALLAZ and Surf Aids, as well as the opportunity to win a ChixStix surfboard.
The board will be drawn at the Showdown Disco Dance Fever and Fashion Parade on the Saturday night at the Lake Ainsworth Sport and Rec Function Centre.
The contest is spread over three days, with the first competitors hitting the water at 7.30am on the Saturday. \] The competition is mobile, using the best contestable conditions between Lennox Beach and North Wall Ballina.
Supporters can fill in The Northern Star Phil Way/Ed Sinnot surfboard give-away coupon and drop it into the red barrel at the contest site before Monday 1pm.
The All Girls Surfriders Club, which runs the event, has grown from humble beginnings in 1992 under the guidance of Kellie O'Brien, Keryn Noach and Le-Ba competitor Max Perrot.
It now has more than 100 members and an organising committee that spends much of the year preparing for the event.
