German tourist Simone Strobel disappears mysteriously

SIMONE Strobel, a beautiful young German tourist, has mysteriously disappeared in Lismore.

Police hold grave fears for the safety of the 24-year-old who has been missing since Friday and are treating her disappearance as suspicious.

A full scale search involving more than a dozen police officers and SES volunteers has been underway since Saturday.

Drains, ditches, creeks, long grass and bushy areas around the fringes of the Lismore CBD were combed, searching for any clue to her whereabouts.

Simone was holidaying at the Lismore Tourist Caravan Park, in Dawson Street, with her boyfriend and another young couple.

The foursome were travelling in a small campervan and were intending to stay only one night.

Last Friday night at about 11pm Simone, a 170cm brunette with a slim build, went for a walk, alone and without shoes, wearing a black tight-fitting singlet top and a black and red floral skirt.

She took no money, no phone and no identification with her. Simone knows no-one in the area and only speaks broken English.

When she didn't return home, her boyfriend raised the alarm.

Police conducted a general search on Saturday and a full scale search yesterday, with SES volunteers also launching two floodboats to search the Wilson River.

Police now hold serious concerns for her welfare.

Her travelling companions yesterday were in tears and too upset to speak with The Northern Star, after having been earlier rung by the metropoilitan media.

Duty Officer Insp Glenn Gilbert said last night the best case scenario was Simone was picked up by someone she recognised and is staying somewhere.

But he said there were many possibilities.

"She may have fallen over and knocked herself out or tripped and fallen into the water," he said.

"We're hoping she turns up very soon."

Anyone who thinks they have seen Simone, or has any information as to her whereabouts, is urged to contact Lismore Police on 6623 1599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
