Focus on new calendar kids
By NERIDA BLOK
LUKE ALLEN is getting used to having his photo taken with his sister.
As Mr August in the 2006 Our Kids calendar, Luke, 4, of Lismore, is pictured pressed against his mother's belly and unborn sister, Jessica.
Yesterday, at the launching of the fundraising project in Lismore's Heritage Park, Luke posed again with Jessica, but this time with her 'on the outside'. Joining Luke were fellow Our Kids calendar participants and families, organisers and sponsors.
Now in its fourth year, the calendar has raised $40,000 to buy equipment for the children's ward and special care nursery of the Lismore Base Hospital.
Twelve children from the local area are depicted by Northern Star photographer Jacklyn Wagner, with graphic design by Dougal Binns, of Graphiti Design in Lismore.
Yesterday was the first time Luke, who was born with a congenital heart condition, and his mother Tammy, had seen the calendar.
"I think it's great," said Tammy. "It's an honour to be part of something so special."
Tammy said staff from the children's ward and special care unit had done so much for them when Luke was born that she had been a member of the Our Kids Committee for the past three years.
"Everything we do on the committee is for such a good cause," she said. "It is vital for the Northern Rivers area to get this equipment for our kids."
Our Kids fundraising officer Rebekka Battista thanked the many sponsors involved for making the calendar possible, including: Mayne Investments, The Condon Group, First Pacific Credit Union, Quota International of Alstonville/Wollongbar, Goonellabah Medical Centre, Lismore City Printery, Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology, Budget Eyewear, North Coast Financial Services, North Coast Radiology, Telstra Countrywide, Southern Cross University, Graphiti Design and Frame-it Picture Framing. It is on sale now at Northern Rivers stores for $15.
