Fires, gunshots in wild frenzy

By RENEE REDMOND

TWO houses were set on fire, three cars destroyed and gunshots fired in a wild domestic dispute near Nimbin on Saturday night.

Police, firefighters and ambulance crews attended the scene in Kyogle Road, Blue Knob, where a 27-year-old man was taken into custody.

The night of violence began when the man allegedly set fire to the loungeroom of his parents' home about 7.50pm on Saturday.

His mother and father extinguished the blaze, while he headed next door armed with a tomahawk and iron bar to confront their neighbour.

Police said the man then set fire to the neighbour's carport, destroying three vehicles.

He also smashed several windows of the main residence.

The male neighbour, in response, fired shots from a gun into the air.

Police officers, firefighters and ambulance crews waited outside the two properties for the 27-year-old to surrender.

He was then taken into custody. Ambulance officers treated the man for a laceration on his lower calf.

Insp Tony Crandell said the neighbour was also taken in for questioning after the incident.

The injured man was interviewed last night and is expected to be charged with a number of fire-related offences today.

Lismore detectives are continuing to interview witnesses.

Police estimate $60,000 of damage was caused as a result of the fires.
