Fast bowler has an ear for the right pitch

FORMER top Lismore cricketer Joel Gregory has been swapping the white flannels for dinner suits this year.

No, he hasn't replaced sport with a glittering night life ... he's been following his musical talent with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

The double bass player, who spent four years at the Brisbane Conservatorium of Music studying classical music, moved to Petersham in Sydney early this year.

He is on the casual roster with the orchestra and when they perform tonight at the Opera House, among the audience will be his parents Ralph and Marianne, who will fly down from Lismore today.

Cricket has recently gone on the back-burner for the 24-year-old, who was more than a handy pace bowler with Eastern Districts in Lismore, at one stage knocking on the door of NSW Country selection.

The 1.90m Joel will again combine cricket with the arts when he travels to England next year to take up a contract with the London-based Hornsley Cricket Club, playing in the Middlesex competition.

His brother Ian played with the same club last year.

At least part of the attraction will be the expanded opportunities to pursue music.
