Experienced umpire to visit Lismore
By JIM CHALLENOR
JUST back from umpiring at the Olympic test tournament in Beijing, international hockey umpire David Gentles will visit Lismore this weekend.
It will be Gentles' second visit to the area after travelling up in 2001.
Gentles has umpired more than 100 international matches. He is one of 15 umpires on the official Olympic/World Cup list, which includes the sport's best umpires.
Since 2001, Gentles has umpired countless international, national and State matches.
But not one to lose his feel for the game and connection to the grass roots of hockey, Gentles continues to find time to play and umpire at home in the Illawarra region.
His willingness to transcend all levels of the game is one of the reasons he continues to be one of the world's best umpires.
Highlights of his recent umpiring career include the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, the 2002 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur and the 2006 World Cup in Germany, and the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
While in Lismore Gentles will umpire some Far North Coast men's A-grade matches on Saturday and attend an informal get-together after the games in the FNC Hockey clubhouse.
He will be available for juniors on Saturday morning and a presentation/discussion on Sunday from 12.30pm at the clubhouse combined with a barbecue.
REX Airlines is sponsoring Gentles' visit.
