Evans airfield verdict today

By SAMANTHA TURNBULL

THE seven-year Evans Head Aerodrome saga is expected to end today.

A State Heritage Council spokeswoman last night confirmed an announcement would be made on whether it can sign-off 15.6ha of annexed aerodrome land for a 100-bed and 120-self-care-unit nursing home development.

The Richmond Valley Council has expressed its support for the Ballina Ex-Services Home proposal, but it needs approval from the Heritage Council after the site was listed on the State Heritage Register.

Richmond Valley mayor Charlie Cox said he was hopeful the Heritage Council's decision would allow the planned nursing home to go ahead.

"I believe it would secure the economic future of Evans Head," he said.

Heritage Council consultants previously said they found the nursing home development 'not compatible' with aviation.
