Eltham unfriendlyover waste plan

By BREE PRICE

ELTHAM resident Mark Perkins thinks the proposed location for the Clunes Wastewater Scheme stinks. Under the proposal, sewage from central Clunes will be pumped to a treatment plant one kilometre upstream from Eltham village and about 400 metres from existing homes. At present, residents' waste is stored in septic tanks. "We will be burdened by smells and the devaluation of our properties," Mr Perkins said. "Treated waste will go directly into the river and so too will semi-treated waste during heavy rain or flood. "The proposed location is near the village and the school - it's smack-bang in the middle of our community." Mr Perkins said despite the impact the proposed treatment plant would have on Eltham residents, they were not consulted. Lismore Water manager Anu Atukorala said all concerns would be addressed. "The Clunes Wastewater Scheme is in the Environmental Impact Statement stage at the moment in order to identify any impacts it may have and then mitigate those impacts," Mr Atukorala said. "We can't allow any odours or noise from the plant and it won't go ahead if those problems exist." n What do you think?
