Driver in court after police chase crash

A 29-YEAR-OLD Sydney man found at the wheel of this crashed car pleaded guilty in the Lismore Local Court yesterday to car theft, stealing petrol and breaching his bail conditions.

Police said the car drove away from a service station in Ballina without paying for petrol about 7.30pm on Monday.

Police stopped the car near Broadwater, but the man drove off when the officer approached him.

Police gave chase, but called it off when the speed became dangerous.

The car, which was later found to be stolen, crashed off the Pacific Highway into trees just south of Broadwater, trapping the driver inside.

A passenger fled the scene as police arrived. The man was treated at the Lismore Base Hospital for minor injuries to his hand. In court yesterday he was refused bail and will appear for sentencing in Sydney later this month.
