Driver dies in Mullum crash

A 19-YEAR-OLD man died and a 20-year-man is in a critical condition in the Royal Brisbane Hospital after the car they were travelling in hit a tree at Mullumbimby on Saturday night.

The 19-year-old driver was travelling in a westerly direction along Mullumbimby Road about 6.50pm when his Ford Falcon left the road and hit the tree.

The driver died at the scene.

His 20-year-old passenger was found unconscious with multiple injuries and was airlifted to Lismore Base Hospital by the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter in a serious condition, before being transferred to Brisbane about 12.30am yesterday.

The force of the impact left the vehicle wrapped around the tree.

The rescue helicopter used its 'nightsun' searchlight to locate a landing site in a paddock next to the accident, which occurred near the 60km/h sign on the eastern side of Mullumbimby.

Police said an investigation was under way into the crash and a report was being prepared for the coroner.
