Dramatic end to carnival
By STEVE SPINKS
IT was a dramatic end in the final of the Lismore Workers Club Under-12 cricket carnival yesterday. Hawkesbury and Illawarra fought out a close match and only a run-out in the final overs with a direct hit proved the difference. In fact, the last two wickets to fall were both run-outs and there were five run-outs during the Illawarra innings. It was Hawkesbury's first title since 1999. The match was so tight that the player of the final was actually an Illawarra player, Saxon Wright. Despite not making the final, the two Far North Coast teams ? Gold and Green ? played well. To highlight this, the player of the carnival was Luke Hamilton, who starred for FNC Gold. The FNC players of the carnival, which is an encouragement award handed out each year, was shared between two FNC Gold players, Daniel Winkler-Maloney and Jake Nind, who are schoolmates at Wyrallah Road Public School. n IT wasn't quite such a dramatic finish in Ballina with Newcastle defeating the Central Coast comprehensively in the final of the L J Hooker Under-13 Ballina carnival. It was the second year in a row that Newcastle has won the tournament. Player of the carnival was won by all-rounder, Jake Gordon, from the Hunter Valley. The all-rounder of the carnival was Jesse Major from Newcastle with 151 runs, 11 wickets and five catches. The batting aggregate went to Jake Keenan of Newcastle with 160 and the bowling aggregate went to Aaron Oudman of Toowoomba with 18 wickets.
