Cudgen edge out Lennox

By Adam Hicks sport@northernstar.com.au CUDGEN Surf Club are the Far North Coast junior branch champions after edging out Lennox Head Surf Club over two days of competition at Byron Bay.

After hundreds of races, Cudgen finished the weekend’s championships with 633 points, just 37 points ahead of Lennox Head on 596. Byron Bay finished third on 250 points.

More than 500 Nippers aged eight to 14 represented 10 surf clubs from Yamba to Fingal.

Dangerous beach conditions forced organisers to move the event from Brunswick Heads to Byron Bay Main Beach, but the championships were still hosted by Brunswick Surf Club.

Cabarita’s Nathan Sharp and Cudgen’s Cody Klein were selected as the branch’s Nipper of the Year candidates.

Byron Bay won the traditional but technical march past ahead of Yamba and Evans Head in third.

Cabarita won the all-age relay from Lennox Head in second and Byron Bay in third. Cudgen’s Emily Hurt was named the Under-8 age champion.

Byron Bay Surf Club will host the Far North Coast senior and masters branch championships next Sunday. About 120 athletes are expected to compete.
